A Sight For Sore Eyes is a psychological thriller by British crime-writer
Ruth Rendell.
Plot summary The novel's two main protagonists are Francine Hill and
Teddy Brex. When a young child, Francine was in the house when her mother
was shot by a stranger at the door, and has been raised by her stepmother
Julia as a near-prisoner. Teddy, too, is an orphan who has lived in a
world of almost unlimited freedom since the death of his parents. He loves
beautiful objects and fine craftsmanship, and little else. Until the two
damaged youths grow into adulthood, and meet.
A central image in the novel is a modern painting of another protagonist,
Harriet Oxenholme, based on Rembrandt's 1664 painting The Jewish Bride.
